The Zero Cost Failure
I'm currently reading the book Conversations with Millyunaires.
Yes, that's spelled wrong intentionally.
One of the interviews is with Robert Allen of "No Muney Down" fame.
He reminded me to share something with you.
Is there any greater opportunity to fail forward fast with your marketing efforts than email?
No.
If you create brochures and they stink, you're out a lot of dough.
If you do a direct mail and it bombs, you're out some serious green.
If you run an advertisement and you get zero response, your bank account is going to be light that month.
But email is the marketing mircacle every personal trainer and personal training business needs to be taking advantage of.
How could you not?
But does it mean you should avoid all other forms of marketing?
No.
Does it mean you should avoid doing anything that you can potentially make a bad decision about, causing you to lose some loot?
No.
Does it mean you should be making better informed decisions using systems and strategies that are proven to work?
Sure does.
What the employee can't grasp - that the entrepreneur does - is that it's not about taking stupid risks.
It's about taking calculated risks.
Well, the successful entrepreneur understands that. I'm not sure all of them do.
And while I'm all for "failing forward fast", I'm even more for learning from OTHER people's failures.
Why wouldn't you want to learn from all the stupid things other people have done? Why not avoid all the mishaps?
Absolutely, some things in life you have to experience for yourself to learn from.
We have to:
- Recover from a broken heart
- Become a good sport through winning AND losing
- Learn how to deal with difficult people
- Get good at driving a car by driving a car
And all sorts of stuff.
But business can be different. There are all sorts of mistakes you can avoid by learning from others.
You just have to be smart enough to realize that.
