How to velvet rope your fitness business

The most important part of the client/trainer relationship is, in fact, the relationship. Just because it is a business relationship does not mean the two-way street that exists in any relationship is eliminated.

While that may seem obvious to some it is grossly misunderstood in the world of personal trainers. For far too long fitness professionals have felt the need to coddle their clients for fear of being of losing one of their sources of income. Many trainers aren’t seeing the long-term ramifications to their business that come with non-compliant clients failing to see results because of their own failure to hold up their end of the relationship. That’s all about to change. Well, at least for the fitness professionals who are worth the rates they charge.

Let’s start at the beginning. The relationship begins as prospect/trainer. Meaning, someone is not a client until they pay you money or exchange value with you in some other way. Until that happens someone is merely a potential client or prospect. It is at this time the ground rules for the relationship are established. And yes, YOU make the rules. You are the expert. You are the one who can deliver the results the prospect seeks. They have come to you for help. When the rules of the client/trainer relationship are established at ground zero there will be no confusion as to what each of your roles is in your mutual success.

Yes, mutual success. Again, this is a relationship where you are exchanging value for value. Do not be fooled by the absurd and outdated notion that the customer is always right. There’s a technical term I use for that idea – it’s a bunch of crap. And just because someone pays money for something doesn’t mean they are in control of the relationship.

Let’s look at what value you each receive to shed some light on the matter. The client receives your guidance, motivation and expertise which in turn provide them the health and fitness benefits they wish to receive. They will likely achieve certain short-term goals.

For example, they may reduce their body fat % by 5 points with your assistance. Now take a moment and think about the long-term value their body receives by them hiring you. Can you put a dollar figure on long-term health and well-being? Can you put a dollar value on living a dynamic, pain-free existence? They are receiving value beyond measure.

What are you receiving? Well, you had better make it perfectly clear when you begin the relationship what they are truly receiving. And you had better make it clear you expect a return in value far greater than the few bucks they are doling out to hire you. That’s just the start of this relationship. Your prospect needs to fully understand the impact they have on everyone they come in contact with and how that reflects either positively or negatively on your business. They need to be made aware they are truly walking, talking billboards. And as a living marketing piece, and by far and away the most valuable marketing method in your arsenal, you simply cannot have non-compliant clients because the ramifications to your long-term revenues will be disastrous.

It’s ok to turn away business. It’s ok to tell a prospect no if you don’t think they would make a great client. It’s called putting a Velvet Rope around your business. Not everyone can get in. And not letting everyone in means you are only taking on clients who truly understand the value for value exchange that occurs in the client/trainer relationship.

Will you have fewer clients? Potentially. But wouldn’t you rather charge more money and work with fewer people? Additionally, wouldn’t you rather only work with the types of clients you want to work with? It’s easy when you put a Velvet Rope around your fitness business!

If you're really serious about being the best then get your hands on the new, and ridicuously affordable, DVD that is separating the big players in this business from everyone else.

Keeping you poor

The life of an info-entrepreneur doesn't suck. That I assure you. My alarm went off today at 8:30, but I didn't get out of bed for quite awhile. I'm a night person. I'd much rather start later in the day. Especially on Mondays. Besides, if you really look at the productive work you get done over the course of a day you could probably fit it in over a few solid hours. Plus, this way I got to go for a long, relaxing walkto clear my mind and check out all the boats docked in my neighborhood. Oh, and I got to see a couple dolphins. Not a bad way to start the week, huh?

Anyway, let's get to the moral of the story. As soon as my alarm went off the first thing out of the DJ's mouth was something like: "And then you'll always be worring about having all that money." Too funny. It's amazing how many people truly believe it would be God-awful to be rich. Why do you think millions of people trudge back and forth in their outrageous commute each day hating every minute of their jobs? Why do you think they are afraid to make a commitment to living the life of their dreams. They're too damn scared. For one reason every friggin' morning when they drive to work they are listenting to some dumbass DJ who makes $25,000 a year telling you how lousy it is to be rich because you'd be worried about your money all the time. Hah!

People who have money don't worry about money. Ask them. Poor people worry about money. Ask them.

At Ryan Lee's Boot Camp I spoke briefly about the fact that it takes courage to be rich. It takes courage to start a business that will provide you financial freedom. It takes courage to live the life YOU want to live.

Now this is not the case for everybody. Far from it. However, if you take a real close look at how the workings of your sub-conscious mind you'll be amazed at the things you've been telling yourself to keep you where you are in life. I could go on and on about this. In fact, I could write a book about it. Someday I will. But for now just realize you shouldn't be taking advice from people who aren't living their best lives. Don't associate with people whose dreams don't align with yours. And if someone ever tells you something is impossible, well, run like hell!

By the way, if you want the ultimate lifestyle and you haven't picked up my www.fitnessinfomistakes.com program I'll take the blame for that. I should have called it Fitness Info Success!

Yours in prosperity,

Jim Labadie

PS- I'm off to the pool. I've got a lot of business reading to get done and since it's close to 90 degrees outside I might as well do it down there. Life is good!

Tips for speaking to a large seminar

There's a HUGE difference between
different types of selling.
- One on one
- Small groups
- Small speaking audience
- Large seminar audience

Every situation is different. And chances are you are going to have to be able to handle each one.
And since I just spoke in front of several hundred people at Ryan Lee's Boot Camp I figured I'd
cover that topic today.
-----
Thank you to everyone who was
there. It was awesome!!!
-----

Tips:
1- Not a big deal, but good to know. The podium is what you stand on. The lectern is what you stand behind.

2- Actually, you should get rid of the lectern and get out into the open on the stage. Don't be afraid. You need to be courageous out there to captivate your audience.

3- I don't love powerpoint and I don't use it for small talks, but I will for a large talk like this. If you don't know how to use it, like me, just have someone else advance the slides for you. That's what I did and it made me much more comfortable.

4- Don't take questions. I wanted to completely captivate my audience and that meant me mesmerizing them with my info. In smaller presentations I like to take questions and it's easier
to hear. But in a group this size I suggest YOU steal the show.

5- Give them most of your best stuff. You've always got more. Most of the time I had my audience taking notes and from what they told me afterwards it was greatly appreciated.

Now, if it's a free talk to a networking group or something like that, well, that's a different story. And a different post.

6- Be yourself. Easier said than done when you are standing in front of 400 people, but it's vital to your success as a speaker. Use your words. Act like you normally act. As I said during my presentation I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I'm not.

7- Thank your audience for being there. They could be somewhere else but they chose to spend their precious time with you. Be grateful for that. I thanked them first. And I thanked my newsletter subscribers and customers as well from the bottom of my heart.

8- Have fun!!! Public speaking is such a thrill for me. I love it. It's such a huge rush.

9- Use humor. No off-colored jokes in bad taste. And don't try to tell a joke you might
forget. Just kid around and be playful.

10- Don't be afraid to close hard.

If you gave a great presentation filled with rock-solid information to an audience who was hungry for it they are going to want more. And you have earned the right to make an offer. Make them a deal they'd be crazy to refuse. Since I feel I've given you some very valuable info just now I'm going to make YOU a deal. I've got a very limited amount of inventory leftover from the Boot Camp that I want off my hands and into yours. You can see my offer to you at:

http://www.JimLabadie.com

But hurry up and get over there because there isn't much left and once it's gone it's gone.
In fact, it might take all of twenty minutes for this to expire.

Yours in prosperity,

Jim Labadie
