Is a cereal going to kick your butt?

Is a cereal going to kick your butt?

I don't know if you're old enough to remember, but back in the day Special K cereal had great ads that asked if you could "pinch an inch."

Yeah, for as long as I can remember they've been going after the weight-loss market. And talk about brilliant marketing. I think that "pinch an inch" slogan was 20 years ago or something and I still remember it.

Check out what they are up to nowadays - http://www.specialk.com/

Take a real good look at that site. Take a real good look at the strategic partnerships. Yahoo! and Amazon. Not bad, huh?

Regardless of what you think of the actual weight-loss plan, it's some kick-butt marketing.

How to sell strength and conditioning

How to sell strength and conditioning

As you probably know, I'm a big believer in emotion based selling.

I know from experience that finding a prospect's emotional reason for wanting to hire a trainer closes sales. And closes them fast!

And it's especially easy for the typical prospect who wants to lose "X" number of pounds of blubber.

But what about athletes? What kind of emotional reason would they have for wanting to hire a coach who improves athletic performance?

Well, what if they didn't start varsity last year after training all off-season. And after all that work they weren't any faster or stronger because they didn't know what they were doing.

What about an athlete who was injured last year and lost their starting spot?

Or what about an athlete who has a lot of heart but just keeps getting his a** handed to him by bigger stronger guys or girls.

See what I mean? Think you'll find some emotion there?

Believe me, you'll find plenty.

"It's quite possible I've got more qualifications than anyone else in my field. Seriously, I've got more letters after my name than I have in my name! However, I'm going to let you in on the horrible truth...there is no relationship between being technically good or skilled at what you do and getting paid.

Jim Labadie is THE MASTER and he has solved that problem. The Ultimate Sales Kit for Fitness Professionals is almost as good as having Jim as your own personal sales staff. Within days of listening to the CD's you'll have, at the least, doubled your investment.

Women: They only want one thing

I talk to a lot of fitness professionals. And 95% of the time I get the same answers to these same two questions:

Q1. Who do you train?

A1. Women

Q2. What do they come to you for?

A2. Weight-loss

Which is pretty much standard, right? I mean, if you're a fitness professional and you train the general population, I'll bet dollars to doughnuts, far and away the majority of your clients are women and they come to you because they want to shed pounds.

Am I wrong?

For the most part 90% of the revenues of fitness pros I talk to come from women who want to look better naked.

Let's face it: When it comes to training men are typically a pain in the you know what.

They think they know it all. They have massive egos. They refuse to ask for help.

Again, am I wrong?

Well, if you're nodding your head that I'm right - and I know you are - then why does your website list things like this:

- Personal Training
- Sport Specific Training
- Senior Training
- Post-Rehab

Take a good hard look at this site:

http://www.podfitness.com/kathysmith?kbid=1035

What is the message? What are they selling?

Look at your site. What are you selling? Who are you selling it to?

I have the utmost respect for women. But when it comes to personal training, they seem to want one thing more than anything else - to look better naked.

Sell them what they want. Give them what they need.

Am I afraid of a 32 year old woman?

Am I afraid of a 32 year old woman?

So there we were.

Across the table from me sat a very successful 32 year old woman.

Her career as a salesperson had become quite lucrative. And she was, in fact, a very good salesperson.

I'm sure this had her going into our meeting very confident that she'd have me doing some song and dance presentation in the hopes of her becoming a client.

I'm also sure her experience as a salesperson made her believe her ability to negotiate would come in handy when it came time to talk about our fees.

"So, tell me what you can do for me," is how she began our meeting.

My response?

"I'd love to tell you about all our programs, but I don't know where to begin. In fact, I'm not even sure which to present to you because you haven't told me what you want to do."

15 minutes later this very successful, very confident 32 year old woman was handing me a check for $1000.

"Is there anything you can do about the price," she asked weakly.

"I''m sorry, there's nothing I can do," I responded.

So how does an "Aw Shucks" silly ole personal trainer pull $1000 out of high-powered professional salesperson in just 15 minutes?

Well, when you know what I know it's pretty easy.

It's certainly become easy for Ryan Shanahan. He recently wrote me:

"As a result of applying your http://www.howtogetmoreclients.com info I bought myself a new Jeep and my wife a new BMW. All within 3 months of following your knowledge.

You really have a gift, Thank you for sharing it."

Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?

A couple of weeks ago I was reading USA Today on a flight to Anaheim.

In the "Life" section there was a cool article on the new gameshow on FOX, "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?"

It covered the reasons for the show's success. Mostly, all the "hooks" the show takes advantage of.

- A great title that captures your curiosity right away

- A big prize (A million bux)

- A comedian for the host (Jeff Foxworthy)

- Audience participation

- Shame (you feel kind of stupid when a 5th grader starts answering questions that you can't)

As per usual, this one hit show is causing all the other networks to scramble to produce an equivalent.

It got me to thinking. And this is merely an idea. I've never tried anything like this myself.

But what about if you created a fitness workshop that was similar to a gameshow?

It would probably work best in a large facility. Or maybe you could do it at a school?

It could involve parents and their kids.

There could be prizes donated.

You could have teams that are asked questions and those who get the answer wrong have to do physical challenges.

Something fun. Something different.

It could be a workshop/seminar. Or it could even be in a boot camp environment.

I don't know that it's something you could do all the time, but it sure could be done once in awhile.

It sure would create some buzz.

But what I really want you to take away from this newsletter is not the idea of a fitness gameshow.

What I do want to impress upon you is the importance of doing something different from everybody else. And that means doing it first.

The people who make the trends are the ones who are rewarded the most.

But any 5th grader could have told you that.

Who loves ya?;-)

The Zodiac and The Secret

As I wrote yesterday, I recently saw the movie about the Zodiac Killer.

Oddly enough, the movie did not inspire me to become a serial killer.

I've seen the movie The Secret three times. I'm a big fan of it.

Oddly enough, it did not inspire me to stop running my business and sit in a room and think positively about winning the lottery expecting the lucky ticket to suddenly manifest out of thin air.

Maybe neither of these things happened because I'm not a complete f*cking idiot.

But with all the talk of how dangerous The Secret is I guess I'm the only person who is giving the public credit for not being 100% moronic.

The people who I know who have seen the movie have not been inspired to quit their job of refuse cancer treatment or anything of the sort. No, they've actually been inspired to take action and make more of their lives.

Perhaps I just don't hang out with the complete f*cking idiots most of the rest of the people who have seen the movie associate with.

I'm guessing that's what's going on here. Most of the rest of society finds the need to protect the public from this terrible "secret" because they either hang out with complete dolts or they find most people to be idiots.

Interesting point of view.

Personally, I expect people to watch The Secret and be inspired to take action towards the things they want. Never in a million years would I think people are so stupid that they would search the beach for a magic lamp and hope their genie would appear.

I guess I give people too much credit. I guess I have a tendency to expect the best. I guess expecting people to want more, be more and to do more is the wrong thing.

Well, according to the naysayers anyway.

Now, I realize they will come back and respond that's not what they meant at all. But what's with all the negative energy? What's with all the anger? What happened to finding the good in something?

Are you that cynical? Are you that afraid? Are you that angry?

Of course the movie has flaws. Of course, of course, of course. Do we need to have the complete f*cking idiot discussion again?

But isn't it amazing how some people look for what's wrong when others look for what's right?

Personally, I'm completley disgusted with a lot of people in the fitness industry right now.

Zodiac Killer and the Fitness Pro

As you may already know, I'm a big movie fan.

When I don't feel like working, well, I usually hit the movies.

So the other day I went to see Zodiac. And if you didn't already know, and couldn't tell from the headline, it's based on the story of the Zodiac serial killer.

What in the world does this movie have to do with you?

In one scene a reporter goes on TV and lets out some details about the case. And while the reporter was just speculating about something the police weren't aware of, they now had a major headache on their hands.

Why?

As the "police detective" in the film said, "It must be true because I saw it on TV."

Meaning, when the public sees something on television they assume it to be true.

It doesn't matter if it's just opinion. It doesn't matter if it's fact.

People believe what they see on TV.

Do you have any idea how powerful that is?

Do you have any idea what type of advantage a fitness expert has when they are a media mainstay?

You must know what you're talking about because you're on TV.

Nothing builds credibility in the public's mind like being in the media.

Not saying it's right. Not saying it makes sense.

But it is what it is. You can either take advantage of it. Or you an ignore it.

It's up to you. http://www.howtogetmorepublicity.com

Who does this guy think he is?

This past fall at the Ryan Lee Boot Camp I met a rather interesting young trainer.

He emailed me a couple days before the event that he was going to be there and just wanted to make me aware that at some point he would be coming up to me and saying hello.

That got my attention. Pretty smart move.

Then at the actual event he wanted to ask me some questions. So while I was heading back to my room he followed me the entire way, just going on and on and on.

Yeah, it was more than a little weird having him actually walk into my hotel room with me, but the guy was so involved in the questions he was asking me he didn't have any clue where he even was.

That got my attention. He wasn't a weirdo. He was just as hungry and eager as any 21 year old I had ever met.

Then when the Boot Camp ended on Sunday night he and his buddy Sam - both all the way from Montana - stuck around for another night.

Why?

Well, most of the presenters stayed another night. And that meant these two young guys got to have dinner with them and pick their brains.

That got my attention, too.

They easily could have just flew out of there like the other 99.9% of attendees did. But my new friend insisted they stay an extra night because he knew a lot of us speakers would be sticking around.

Pretty impressive, no?

His name is Nate Green and he's about the most impressive networker I've ever met. And yeah, he's all of 21 years old.

Read this email a couple of times and just think about it. At 21 he calls these people his friends:

Ryan Lee
Alwyn Cosgrove
Mike Boyle
Lou Schuler
Susan Hill
Pat Rigsby and Nick Berry
Craig Ballantyne
Bill Hartman
Chris Shugart

Not bad, right?

Are you this hungry? Are you this determined? Are you this creative?

Well, if you're looking for some serious inspiration check out what Nate has created for you: http://fitnessindustrygiants.com

I've listened to the interviews he has done with his newfound friends and they are priceless.

Just as an example, you can listen to Susan Hill and find out how she transformed from a 'regular' trainer to an extremely successful entrepreneur with over 11,000 members on her member-based website in just over 2 years.

Yeah, you read the above right. ELEVEN THOUSAND MEMBERS!

If you are and want to remain a 'regular' trainer then I wouldn't bother listening to these interviews.

But if you're as hungry and hell-bent on being a huge success in this industry then you want to get to http://fitnessindustrygiants.com right now!

Oh, and Nate has some extra special bonuses that are only available until 8PM tonight.

3 things to be happy about ;-)

This is all good stuff, so please settle in and take your time reading it through.

1) If you're looking for great marketing ideas for Spring check out the latest edition of Fitness Management's e-Letter at: http://tinyurl.com/39wwvd

And yes, some of mine are in there! Textbook recycling of publicity. ;-)

2) There's a new organization that is aiming to bring independent health clubs together to help them become more successful.

IHCNA.org is an online collaborative network of independent health club owners and managers. This organization is designed to provide information and access to each other.

It does not sell a thing.

What it does provide is a chance to learn more about being successful from others who are also trying to be successful.

The organization is FR.EE and open to owners, general managers, fitness managers, recreation center managers, hospital wellness managers, sales/membership managers, operations managers, and other similar capacity professionals.

For more information, please visit www.ihcna.org

3) Dr. Chris Mohr and Jayson Hunter, RD, CSCS - Jayson is the Head of Research and Development for the soon to be launched Prograde Nutrition - have created a simple-to-use, and very affordable, software to help you create mealplans in just minutes!

Here's what Craig Ballantyne thinks about http://mealplansinminutes.com/

Want your voice to be heard?

My good friend Amanda Vogel is looking for sources for an article she is writing

Yes, it's the same Amanda Vogel who is a freelance writer for Health, Shape and Self magazines.

Here's what she is looking for:

Ever heard these fitness-industry rules?
- Never turn away a client if you can help it.

- Be upfront by publishing your prices in your marketing material and on your website.

- Charge all your clients the same fee.

- Use only thin, traditionally fit-looking models in your ads to successfully sell your services.

- Take every prospective gym member on a tour of the facility as soon as possible.

If reading any of the above rules made you want to jump up in protest, I want to hear from you! I'm looking for expert sources I can quote in an article I'm writing on breaking the rules in the fitness industry.

The piece will appear in a widely read fitness trade magazine. If you are available to do an email interview for this piece in the next few weeks, please contact me at writer@activevoice.ca with a few lines about why you'd be a good source for this subject. I'll get back to you with more details after that.

Thanks!

One of my Biggest Public Speaking Secrets

If you aren't doing any public speaking to promote your fitness business I highy suggest you start right away. There are a ton of networking and civic organizations that meet weekly and need speakers. More than likely, you'll need to do it for free, but there's no cheaper or faster way to grow your client base.

The biggest mistake I used to make when I started public speaking, with the hopes of selling my services, was taking questions at the end.

Why is that a mistake?

Simple. The talk you give should be designed to have a very strong 'close' at the end. You can't do that if your talk drags on and on with endless questions from people trying to get free advice from you. Hey, I'm sure you're a great person, but this is a free talk. You can't give it all away for fre.e when you're running a business.

So what do you do?

Take questions in the beginning. That way you can answer them as you go along to make sure everyone is happy. And you'll never run out of content either, so it will help with any fear you may have about speaking. Plus, it allows you to make a strong 'close' at the end to let everyone know you're looking for clients who are ready to make great changes in their lives!

If you want to see some incredible speakers look no further than the JP Fitness Summit at http://www.jpfitness.org

Who are the speakers?

Alwyn Cosgrove

I started in March '06 with about 10 people attending. It's steadily grown over the last 9 months with this month hitting 56 enrolled!!

It was your product that cemented the idea to start my own camps. I had no idea at the time that some initial guidance from the Ultimate BC CD's and some marketing know how would amount to a such a successful business.

I want to thank you for providing that spark that ignited what this year will be a SIX-FIGURE boot camp business!!'

The better end of the deal

Close your eyes and conjure up an image of a sales person.

What do you think of immediately?

Some slimy, sleazy jerk who wants nothing more than to trick you out of your money?

That's what a lot of people envision when they hear the word sales person.

And as fitness professionals we see ourselves as being on the opposite end of the spectrum.

That's a good thing.

Even better, people who have the best interests of prospective clients in mind are the best type of sales people.

I know, I know. That doesn't seem possible.

But it is very much the truth.

In fact, it makes it incredibly easy to think of yourself as a sales professional as well as a fitness professional. It's in our nature to want to help people. For most of us it's why we got in this business in the first place. To help others.

Trouble is, too many of us forget what the word professional means. By definition, a professional gets paid for what they do.

Then why do so many fitness professionals have so much trouble asking people for money in exchange for their services?

I know there are some out there who cannot understand why people would want to pay for their help. Fitness comes so naturally to them, why doesn't it come so naturally to others?

These same professionals hold the belief in their own mind that their services aren't very valuable because they would never pay for the service themselves.

Sounds kind of silly, but it is true.

If you don't believe your service is valuable then you will never be able to sell it.

There's nothing unethical about asking to be paid for what you do.

Especially, the people in our profession. We change lives! We lengthen lives! We do incredible things for our clients!

What do we get in return?

Of course there is the satisfaction that comes with helping a client. But mainly we get money in return. They get a new life and you get some money.

Who gets the better end of the deal? Personally, I think they do.

Imagine you lost the fitness lifestyle that you lead. What would you pay to get it back? A fortune, I'm sure.

Why then feel badly about asking prospective clients for money?

Don't get me wrong. I don't suggest you start asking a king's ransom for your services. However, I do suggest you take a long, hard look at what it is you provide to your clients.

There is no amount of money in the world to compensate us for what we do. I firmly believe that. If you don't then you need to either re-evaluate your beliefs or the quality of service you provide to your clients.

Have you ever had to hire a lawyer? I have. And I can tell you my small business attorney cost me $175 per hour. He handled some legal matters for me and charged me more than I'd like to admit.

If you had given anyone of us the same amount of time that he took to create some documents and file some papers with the government, we could have changed a person's life around for the better, forever.

Who deserves to charge more?

If you said the lawyer then you are definitely in the wrong profession.

Most people are robots.

Tell them something and without thinking they just accept it as fact.

I'll admit it, I've been guilty of it.

But I do my absolute best to THINK about things.

I could rant about this for days, but I'll keep it short as possible.

The below was recently sent to me and wanted to share it with you.

Why?

It's a great example of getting people to think.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CLEAR EXPLANATION OF TAX CUTS.........................
Sometimes politicians, journalists and others exclaim; "It's just a tax cut for the rich!" and it is just accepted to be fact, without questioning it. But what does that really mean?
Just in case you are not completely clear on this issue, the following might help.
Let's put tax cuts in terms everyone can understand.
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100.
If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that's what they decided to do.
The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve.
"Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20." Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so
The first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free.
But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?'
They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.
So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.
And so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free.
But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.
"I only got a dollar out of the $20,"declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man," but he got $10!"
"Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I!"
"That's true!!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!"
"Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison. "We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!"
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.
The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him.
But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important.
They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!
And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works.
The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction.
Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore.
In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.
The Best Glute Move Ever!
Did that headline get your attention?
Did you decide to read this blog post to find out what the "Best Glute Move Ever!" really is?
Well, it sure got my attention at Barnes and Noble yesterday.
I was there writing copy with Ryan Lee for our soon to be launched Prograde Nutrition website - which, by the way, is just about ready for launch.
Anyway, I was looking through the magazine racks for ideas and there was some special issue of Oxygen magazine with that exact headline on the cover.
So of course my curiosity got to me and I opened to that page to find out that the Best Glute Move Ever is the squat.
Yeah, a plain old squat.
See where I'm going with this?
The titles of your articles...
The subject of your emails...
The headlines on your website and press releases...
Do they really capture the attention of the reader?
If the cover of that magazine had said "Learn how to do a Squat" do you think I would have rushed to read that?
Do you think a woman browsing the magazines would have?
In other words, are your prospects intrigued by your writing?
I probably got you to read because you really, really wanted to know what I think the Best Glute Move Ever is.
Think about it.
Who loves ya? ;-)
PS- If you want MORE newsletter subscribers reading YOUR newsletters you need a bigger list. There's nobody better at teaching you how to build one than Tellman Knudson.
I actually met him this past fall. Little out there. But the guy is friggin' brilliant. And I mean BRILLIANT. If you want a bigger list you need Tellman's know-how.
2 Ways to Get Collect More Emails & Sales
This is a message from my friend Craig Ballantyne for you. If you're looking for great information to send to your email list or clients Craig's got some stuff ready for you to take advantage of - today!
Check it out:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

From Craig Ballanyne:

I've received a lot of emails from trainers asking to use my Turbulence Training reports as bonus items in their own product packages and to give away in exchange for gathering prospect's email addresses.

So, I'm giving away TWO reports for trainers to use for exactly those purposes.

First, trainers can now download The Original 4-Week Turbulence Training Bodyweight Workout as a free bonus on site to help get more newsletter subscribers.

That's right, you can offer this workout as a free bonus just for signing up for your newsletter.

I've sold thousands of copies of this report for $19.99, but now you can offer it to your prospects at no charge. You can also give it away to your boot-camp attendees, or as a bonus in your product packages, or even as an unannounced bonus download in your autoresponders.
To download your copy of this report, please visit:

http://workoutmanuals.com/PTU_free_TT_report

Second, I'm offering another Turbulence Training e-book to the first 50 trainers that contact me through www.ChinaisGettingFat.com

My assistant will email you a link to download an 8-week Turbulence Training Bodyweight Workout (Value = $29.99) that can be used as a free bonus to go along with any products you sell (but I ask that you only use it as a free bonus to add value to a product that you sell).

I have NEVER allowed ANYONE to give this 8-week Bodyweight Training report away before, and that's why I'm limiting it to only the first 50 trainers that contact him through http://www.ChinaisGettingFat.comtoday!

Do you belong?

Last week I wrote some marketing tips for Boot Camps.

One of them was how important it is to build a sense of community.

Why?

Because people, myself included, like to feel they are a part of something.

They like to feel like they belong to a unique community that not just anyone can be a part of.

That's how it is where I train. Check it out at:http://jupiter.sonzexercise.com

Really take a look at the site. Take a good hard look at how they do a terrific job of building a sense of community with their site.

It's in a blog style format. Each day there is a diffenent workout and I go to find out what it is and to see the comments of the clients who have gone through it earlier in the day.

So not only do they do a great job of using the site to build the Sonz community in Jupiter, FL, but the site also does a great job of marketing their facility.

Do you think the people who go through these brutal workouts - and believe me, they are brutal - don't brag to their friends and tell them to look at the site?

Do you think that might result in some new clients?

So, how are you buidling a sense of community with your clients? Do they feel a part of something? What are they telling their friends about you? How are you using technology to make your marketing efforts easier?

Who loves ya? ;-)
