One of my Biggest Public Speaking Secrets

If you aren't doing any public speaking to promote your fitness business I highy suggest you start right away. There are a ton of networking and civic organizations that meet weekly and need speakers. More than likely, you'll need to do it for free, but there's no cheaper or faster way to grow your client base.

The biggest mistake I used to make when I started public speaking, with the hopes of selling my services, was taking questions at the end.

Why is that a mistake?

Simple. The talk you give should be designed to have a very strong "close" at the end. You can't do that if your talk drags on and on with endless questions from people trying to get free advice from you.

Hey, I'm sure you're a great person, but this is a free talk. You can't give it ALL away for free when you're running a business.

So what do you do?

Take questions in the beginning. That way you can answer them as you go along to make sure everyone is happy. And you'll never run out of content either, so it will help with any fear you may have about speaking.

Plus, it allows you to make a strong "close" at the end to let everyone know you're looking for clients who are ready to make great changes in their lives!

What if you hit the lottery?

What would be next?

You no longer work, so what do you do? How do you fill your days? The green stuff is no longer an issue, so work is optional.

It's amazing how easily people can answer those questions when you ask it that way.

But when I ask fitness pros what they would do if their business only required a fraction of their time they freak out.

I think most are scared to death of having so much time on their hands!

I think, scratch that, I KNOW a great deal of trainers are 100% scared to death of success.

People are addicted to their emotions the same way drug addicts can't wait for their next fix.

What would they do without all the stress?

What would they do without all the worry over money?

What would they do if their friends and family didn't coddle them and tell them everything is going to be ok?

There's all sorts of head-trash most fitness pros need to work on, but for now just start with something simple:

Pretend you won the lottery and you never have to "work" again. How do you spend your days?

Come up with that answer and you suddenly give your sub-conscious mind a target to hit.

Life is easy, when you let it be.

My Biggest Rant Ever!

Well, I don't know if it's my biggest, but I sure do have some things to get off my chest today.

Yesterday I learned that my good friend Brian Grasso can be found in the pages of News Week this issue. You can also find the story online at:

Know where Brian first discovered the power of media exposure?

ADD $21,600 to your annual income from just 1 corporation at a 50% discounted rate!!!
Now, double that to the rate you should be charging once you establish yourself as the local expert, and your looking at:

ADD $43,200 to your annual income from just 1 corporation at a full 200/hour rate!!! "I'm not a sales person by nature."

Something I used to tell myself all the time. I know as a fitness professional that high-pressure sales tactics don't come naturally to us.

That is a good thing.

But a lot of us hold the belief that a sales person is supposed to be someone who is pushy. I've come to learn that selling has absolutely nothing to do with pressuring people. Nor should you place any pressure on yourself.

Selling your services requires nothing more than having a conversation with a fitness prospect. If you can't hold a conversation with a person then you are probably in the wrong industry in the first place. During the time you are talking you will find out whether or not you and that person are a good fit for one another. If you are, great! If you aren't, it's no big deal.

There will be more prospects, right?

In case, you haven't noticed the majority of people need your help! Thanks to the fast-food business, even China is becoming obese.

In a selling situation you always get back what you put out. Meaning, however you are acting is how the prospect you are communicating with will respond. If you are acting a little nervous the prospect will sense it and may begin to get nervous about hiring you. If you are acting a little pushy your prospect will sense it and begin to push back. Just relax and talk to the person.

Your prospective client should be doing the vast majority of the talking. Sales is about them, not about you. It's natural for any person to want to rant and rave about the terrific services they provide and all the wonderful things they can do for that person.

But it's even harder for us as fitness professionals because we have the ability to help people like few other professions can. However, you have to do it. You must listen to what they want. It's not your money, yet, it's their money. If you want to get a new client you'd better listen for what it will take to get them as a client.

It really is incredible what happens when you listen to your fitness prospects. They will tell you exactly what it is they want from you. By simply repeating back to them that you will provide them (assuming you can) with the exact results they are looking for, you'll probably have a new client.

Make the most of your media hits

Make the most of your media hits

It's Monday.

And Monday's for me are "transition" day.

That means I get back into the swing of things after the weekend. You wouldn't want me to "pull" something by working too hard on a Monday, would you?

So to help me out, and more importantly, to help YOU out, I enlisted the help of my friend Amanda Vogel to start your week off on the right note.

Follow these easy media tips from her to leverage the heck out of your time and effort:

Tip 1: When a journalist interviews you for a story, you have his or her full attention. Take advantage of this golden opportunity to receive more media exposure. After you've addressed all the journalist's questions, pitch an idea for another article that you could contribute to as an expert source. This works whether you're doing a phone or email interview. Just be sure to make your pitch short and to the point.

Tip 2: Make your health and fitness articles work for you many times over. Sell them as reprints for extra revenue (often with a time investment of 10 minutes or less). Use your previously published articles as lead-generating content for your client newsletters or website. Tweak the wording for new audiences (an article on the benefits of boot camps can be easily adjusted for a skiing magazine, running magazine, parenting magazine, business magazine and more).

Tip 3: Keep in touch with the media people who contact you. This sounds so simple, but the vast majority of fitness pros don't do it. The hardest part of scoring the kind of media exposure that brings you the recognition and credibility you want is breaking in. This applies to both writing articles and getting publicity. Once you've made contact with members of the media, you're on the "inside," so to speak. This is your chance to turn one valuable media hit into ongoing exposure and marketing power for your fitness business.

Oh, and I'm NOT suggesting that you add journalists to your newsletter list without their permission (this is a good way to get your email blocked from reaching them). I'm talking about pitching ideas, sending informative press releases, occasionally asking if they need help with a story, etc.
