Once upon a time I had a conversation with one of my Ultimate Sales Kit customers.

We spoke about the rate he charges per session. And while he truly believes he deserves the $100 he asks for - and I do too -he has trouble asking people for that much money.

He told me he hates the cringe on the face of his prospect when they hear he charges $100 per session.

As soon as I heard that I knew what the problem was.

If someone cringes in response to something YOU say, it is because of something YOU are doing.

Chances are you yourself are cringing first.

Or your tone of voice may have changed from one of confidence to one of self-doubt.

So you need to be very wary of two things:

1- When you tell them how much you charge make sure you say it with complete confidence and authority. If for any reason you give your prospect the sense you aren't worth the asking price they'll pick it up sub-consciously and all is lost.

Well, more than likely.

2- Make sure you don't have any "headtrash" in regards to what people are willing to pay for a service they value. In other words, if you think people would never pay $100 (or more) per session then why the heck are you charging that much?

The fact of the matter is, people will pay $100 per hour (or more) for a good service to someone they believe will deliver the results they are paying for.

But you have to believe you're really worth it.

B- There are lots of people to interview for the story

C- People are always interested in shedding pounds

D- It's easy for the journalist to cover because they simply write about their experience

Closely Guarded Infomercial Secret

I had to put this on on the blog because the filters just wouldn't have let these terms slide through.

No way.

Anyway, I was watching the tube for a couple minutes this morning to help me wake up - I am NOT a morning person - and I got to watch one of my favorite programs.

A weight loss infomercial!!

Can there be a better educational tool for a fitness pro to learn marketing from?

I highly doubt it.

Especially since it reminded me of two amazing terms to help market your business.

1- Dress sizes
2- Inches

How many times have you watched an infomercial where they repeatedly say - and with great reason - "I went from a size 14 to a size 8 and lost 6 inches around my waist"?

I watched about 5 minutes of this one and they must have said it 50 times!

And since I've seen this particular infomercial quite a few times now it must be working. If it wasn't "pulling" they wouldn't still be running it.

How does this apply to you?

"I'm having a hard time distinguishing the boot camp from a group aerobics class. Because we offer approx. 20 group classes per week in my gym that are included in the membership I'm struggling to make the camp something completely different.

Can you help me with this question?"

Since my good friend Frank Dolan runs boot camps at his club I thought it best if he answered Lance.

"The first promotion I did for my Fitness Boot Camp came after a string of weekly emails promoting the concept of having a definitive plan when they come into the gym and not just doing random workouts.

Although we do have classes (and they are still very popular) we spend a good deal of time promoting the fact that people should know how a class fits into their week, month, etc. Classes tend to be good for people who know what they are doing, but could be potentially dangerous for the beginner. What you get with Fitness Boot Camp is a coach. Not an instructor who is getting in a workout as well.

The instructors of the camp are also Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists, so the level of coaching is superior to that of a fitness instructor. Not to say that this is important to all people, but it is to the people that take the camp. There will always be people who just want to work out with a group regardless of the instructors credentials. This is not my market for the camps. We tend to attract people who are interested in quality, getting the absolute best, and don't have time to think about designing a program. They just want to know that the details are handled by highly qualified people. The fact that the class is a blast is a bonus!!

I would say that prior to promoting your camp you have to realize that you are promoting to a different mentality than the class taker. It is more like promoting personal training, so gear your marketing material to that demographic.

As far as details go, we started initially with a 3 day camp. Now we do a 4 day camp. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday at 6 AM or 7:30 PM, then both groups meet at 8AM on Saturday morning. We have actually been holding our Saturday sessions at the beach this summer. I have included some pictures that may spark some ideas for you...

The ideas and ways to keep the campers signing up over and over again are endless. Just like Jim says, "you must over-deliver, and offer a ton more value than expected"!!!

What's the name of your 'anchor'?

I'm quite certain as a Fitness Professional you've dealt with at least one client who had at least one "anchor."

What's an "anchor?"

That's what I politely call a person who is keeping someone else from succeeding.

An "anchor" can be your client's friend, co-worker, spouse, mother, father, sibling...the list goes on and on. They are the type of people who are happy with being average. They don't mind being fat and out of shape. They want nothing more than to literally drag everyone else they know down to their level so they can feel better about themselves. So long as everyone else they know is fat and out of shape and perfectly willing to do nothing about it all is ok in their world.

Now when you train clients these "anchors" are very obvious.
They are the ones telling your client it's ok to skip their workout. It's ok to have those buffalo wings. They can't understand why your client who is desperately trying to change who they are is no longer willing to make fun of all those crazy people who eat vegetables and exercise all the time.

Thing is; we rarely see the "anchors" in our own lives.
And they may not try to keep you from being fit and healthy.

However, they very well may be trying to keep you from achieving extraordinary success in other areas of your life. And if you're reading this email then I'm pretty certain you're trying to improve your financial lot in life.

So what's the name of your "anchor" or "anchors?"

I bet if you take a step back and look closely you'll start to recognize lots of people close to you who can't understand why you're always looking to improve your business skills. Or maybe they don't get why you're now spending less time with them and more on growing your fitness empire. Whatever the case may be, they are out there lurking.

What do you do about them?

Well, what do you tell your clients to do about their "anchors?"

You probably tell them that for their own health and wellness some people will need to be left behind. You probably confront them with the cold, hard reality that some of their close friends may not be close friends pretty soon.

Well, if they want to succeed anyway. And yes, they may even need to spend less time with certain family members.

You are starting to see my point here, right?

If you're looking to grow your Fitness Empire you are going to have to deal with YOUR "anchors."

Your Friday the 13th Sales Tip

What happens to your business when a client doesn't follow your program?

More than likely they don't see the results they said they were looking for, right?

What effect does that have on YOUR business?

Not good, right?

You can say anything to anyone so long as you say it the right way.

Here's one of the greatest questions you can ask someone who you are thinking of taking on as a client.

"I feel very uncomfortable asking you this, but I have to.
Are you going to become a walking billboard for me? Or a walking disaster?"

Some things to note:

1- The "uncomfortable" line gives you permission to ask those questions.

2- Be sure you explain to the prospect the life of your business depends on their actions and you need to know the answer to be sure they are going to hold up their end of the bargain.

3- Be sure to ask this question AFTER you have gotten to know your prospect well and have found out the emotional reasons they want to achieve their goals.

Sell them what they want.

Don't try to sell them what you think they need.

Tell Wall Street to go to...

If you can call spending time in New Jersey a vacation, well, I was on vacation this week.

And before you start with the wise cracks you should know that I'm originally from the land of the Soprano's and my family still lives there. So keep the jokes to yourself ;-)

I was at dinner with my family celebrating my 35th birthday and my favorite subject came up.

Marketing.

You see, my brother-in-law is a terrific guy. You couldn't ask for a better person to marry your sister. And for the sake of his family, I'd love to see him quit his job on Wall Street.

Working 14 hour days is no way to go through life.

Anyway, back to marketing. John, my brother-in-law, has always wanted to open his own business. But I don't think he realizes what business is all about. In fact, not many Wall Street hot-shots do.

Business is marketing and marketing is business.

(You might want to print that backwards on your forehead so you see it everytime you look in the mirror.)

Businesses fail all the time because they fail to realize the importance of marketing.

OR

They fail because they are afraid of marketing.

Oddly enough there are people who would rather go out of business than feel "cheesy" with marketing that works.

And you know exactly what I'm talking about.
